A couple of years ago I decided I wanted to give back a little. I had a few difficult years and I was so very touched to see how people – even people I didn’t know – would offer to help. Not with massive gestures just with day to day acts of kindness. So now things are easier, I felt I had to do something to give back. However small it was and as often as I could.
One of the little things I decided to do is to donate blood. I had a life long dislike for needles which has prevented me to donate blood. Now during my pregnancy I had to give so much blood I realise how silly I was. Some nurses were amazing to find the right vein some left me with severe bruising but I’d be honest, after 9 months I cared little the discomfort. So I donate my blood. It taught me a lot. First of all, that I should really eat a bigger breakfast. I did faint once and got a bit off colour another… but the feeling of pride I get when I receive a SMS telling me where my donation went really makes it worth. So far my donations have gone to Whittington hospital, Southampton hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital. I donate during my lunch break on Fridays. Can’t do it any other time as it is not the most child friendly place though you get a lovely sticker “my mum gave blood today” which is always a hit with my son. Last week someone at work asked me “why do you donate blood”? I laughed and replied because “I want to save lives of course”! A little smug I know 😉 but I didn’t how to say I just want to give back so I used humour. They are so many people donating regularly without bragging about it. I should probably just replied … “why not”?
The other thing I decided to do was to donate my hair. I usually have pretty long hair. I get a trim every two or three months and once a year I get it cut shoulder length. Usually no one notices because my hair is always pretty long. It varies in length from shoulder to waist but today I needed to give a minimum of 7 inches and just to make sure it was not going to waste I gave 8 inches – well at least that”s what I thought… The hairdresser chopped 9,5 inches! 😨 And now my hair is the shortest it has been since I was a girl 😂. I have to be honest it will take time to get used to it (probably until it reaches my shoulders again) but cutting an extra 2,5 inches of hair to help the Little Princess Trust makes total sense! I am a little vain with my hair I must admit but I think I’d do it again.
The charity bits:
The Little Princess Trust is a children’s cancer charity. Their mission is to supply real hair wigs free of charge to children suffering with cancer, for the duration of their treatment. In addition they assist children with other conditions which also result in hair loss, the most common being alopecia. Our commitment to these children is different. Despite being set up to help children with cancer, the Trust is able to supply young people that have a diagnosis other than cancer, with a single wig.
